Psalm 23 - The Lord is My Shepherd

As we continue our Scripture Memory Challenge, we have already begun to see some of the beautiful characteristics of our Lord. In Genesis 1:1, we met Him as the Creator of the heavens and the earth. In John 1:1, we learned that Jesus existed from the beginning, was with God, and is God. In John 1:14, we saw that the eternal Word became flesh and dwelt among us, revealing the glory of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. Then, in Psalm 19:1, we were reminded that the heavens continually declare His glory and proclaim the work of His hands.

Now, in Psalm 23, we discover another beautiful picture of our Lord. The glorious Creator whose majesty fills the heavens is also our loving Shepherd. The One who spoke the universe into existence is the same One who gently leads, faithfully provides for, protects, and cares for His people.

Psalm 23 is a psalm of David, who knew firsthand what it meant to care for sheep. Before God called him to be king over Israel, David spent years as a shepherd. He understood the responsibility of leading sheep to food and water, protecting them from danger, and staying with them through every difficulty. As David reflected on his own life, he recognized that God had cared for him in much the same way.

Notice in the opening verse that David does not simply say that the Lord is a shepherd. He says, “The Lord is MY shepherd.” This is the confidence of someone who knows God personally and has learned to trust Him.

David goes on to describe the Lord’s faithful presence. Even through the valleys of life, the Lord is near. God does not promise that life will be free from hardship, but He does promise to remain with His people. He leads us in times of peace, walks with us through the darkest valleys, and faithfully brings us home.

Later, in John 10:11, Jesus identifies Himself as “the good shepherd” who lays down His life for the sheep. Through His death and resurrection, He made it possible for us to belong to His flock forever. The Shepherd who guides us today is the same Savior who gave His life to save us.

As you memorize Psalm 23 this week, do not simply learn the words. Take time to meditate on what they mean. Whatever you are facing today, remember that your Shepherd knows you, walks with you, provides for you, protects you, and will never leave you. You can trust Him completely.
