Verse 10 - Romans 6:23

The Wages of Sin and the Gift of God
This week's Scripture Memory Challenge verse is Romans 6:23. Last week, Romans 3:23 reminded us that everyone has sinned and fallen short of God's glory. We have all failed to live according to His perfect standard. But what are the consequences of our sin? And is there any hope for us?
This week, Paul gives us both the sobering answer and the wonderful hope of the gospel:
"For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." (Romans 6:23, ESV)
Notice the contrast between two important words in this verse: wages and gift.
Wages are something we earn. When we work, we expect to receive payment for what we have done. Paul tells us that the wages of sin are death. Because God is perfectly holy and just, sin cannot go unpunished. Our sin separates us from God, and apart from Christ, its ultimate consequence is eternal death.
But thankfully, Paul doesn't stop there. One little word changes everything: but.
While death is what we have earned through our sin, eternal life is what God freely offers us through Jesus Christ. We cannot earn it through good works, religious activities, or our own efforts to become better people. It is a gift made possible through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Think about the difference. We deserve judgment, but God offers mercy. We have earned death, but God offers eternal life. And He offers this gift because of His great love for us.
This is the wonderful truth of God's grace. The holy and just God we have been learning about throughout our Scripture Memory Challenge is also merciful, gracious, and abounding in steadfast love. He has provided the very salvation we could never accomplish for ourselves.
But a gift must be received. God calls us to repent of our sins and place our faith in Jesus Christ, trusting in His finished work on the cross rather than anything we could do to save ourselves.
As you memorize Romans 6:23 this week, consider both sides of this verse. Recognize the seriousness of sin, but don't overlook the wonderful gift God offers through His Son.
Have you personally received God's gift of eternal life through faith in Jesus Christ?
