A Vision of God's Holiness

In his vision, Isaiah saw the Lord seated on a throne, high and lifted up, with the train of His robe filling the temple. Above Him stood seraphim, each having six wings: with two they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they flew.

They called out to one another:

"Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of His glory!"(Isaiah 6:3)

Isaiah continues by describing the overwhelming majesty of God's presence: "the foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of Him who called, and the house was filled with smoke." Confronted with God's perfect holiness, Isaiah became painfully aware of his own sinfulness and cried,

"Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!"(Isaiah 6:5)

This remarkable vision marked Isaiah's call and commission to be God's messenger to His people.

Isaiah's vision gives us a profound glimpse of God's holiness, majesty, power, and sovereignty. Standing before such a holy God, Isaiah immediately recognized his own unworthiness and sin. His response reminds us that the proper reaction to God's holiness is humble confession and genuine repentance.

Yet the vision does not end with conviction. In verses 6 and 7, one of the seraphim touched Isaiah's lips with a burning coal from the altar, declaring that his guilt had been taken away and his sin forgiven. God graciously cleansed Isaiah before sending him out to serve. In the same way, through Christ, our sins have been forgiven, and we have been made clean before God.

When we truly grasp both the greatness of God and the depth of His grace, our hearts are transformed. We become willing to answer God's call and are empowered to serve Him faithfully, just as Isaiah was.
