Love the Lord with All Your Heart

As we continue our journey through Scripture, we have been learning more about who God is. We have seen Him as Creator, as the eternal Word who became flesh, as the One whose glory is displayed in creation, as our loving Shepherd, as perfectly holy, and most recently, as merciful, gracious, patient, faithful, forgiving, and just.

As we come to Deuteronomy 6:5, the focus shifts from what God has revealed about Himself to how we should respond to Him.

Deuteronomy 6:5 is part of one of the most important passages in the Old Testament. Just before this verse, Moses reminds the people of Israel, “The Lord our God, the Lord is one” (Deuteronomy 6:4). Then comes the response God desires from His people: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.”

God doesn't simply want a place somewhere in our lives. He wants our whole heart. We are called to love Him with everything we are: our thoughts, desires, choices, strength, and everyday lives. Our love for God should shape how we live, how we treat others, how we spend our time, and the decisions we make.

Centuries later, when Jesus was asked which commandment was the greatest, He pointed back to these very words. He said that loving God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength is the greatest commandment (Mark 12:29–30). At the very center of a life with God is a relationship of love. And that love begins with Him. We love because He first loved us (1 John 4:19).

As you memorize Deuteronomy 6:5, ask yourself: Does my life show that I love God with all that I am? Let these words become more than a verse you know by heart. Let them become the way you desire to live.
